최근 호텔에는 환경보호의 명목으로 문앞이나 침구류에 놓아두면 사용한 침구류를 세탁하지 않고 그대로 사용하겠다는 의미인 그린 카드류(Green Card)나, 별도 카드를 놓아야만 세탁해주는 제도가 확대되고 있는데요. 그럼에도 불구하고 아직까진 침구류를 1회 사용 후 세탁하는 것이 일반적인 것 같습니다. 그러다 보니 대부분의 호텔 침구류 커버인 린넨이 일반 가정집보다는 훠~~얼~~~씬 더 빠르게 닳게 됩니다. 그렇게 다 닳은 린넨은 버려지는 경우도 많은 것 같습니다. 이런 상황에 대해 웨스틴 호텔 앤 리조트(Westin Hotels & Resorts)에서 새로운 발표를 했습니다. 바로 '****프로젝트 라이즈: 스레드포워드(Project Rise: ThreadForward)'라는 프로그램입니다. 버려진 린넨을 수집하고, 처리 및 재가공하여 새로운 천으로 만든 후 아이들의 파자마 잠옷 등을 만드는 프로그램입니다. 전형적인 업사이클링이지요.
이 프로그램은 비누 재활용 프로그램을 기획하는 등 글로벌 헬스 분야 선두주자라고 하는 클린 더 월드(Clean the World)와 혁신적인 기술 및 솔루션 기업인 디버전트 에너지(Divergent Energy)와 협력해 기획되었다고 합니다. 실제 이 프로그램을 위해 전세계 웨스틴 호텔들이 힘을 모았는데요. 5개월만에 50 곳의 웨스틴 호텔에서 13.6톤(3만 파운드) 분량의 린넨 및 타월을 보내줬다고 합니다. 발표는 3월 중순에 했는데 4/16부터 어려운사람들에게 물건을 전달하는 딜리버링 굿(Delivering Good) 등을 통해 뉴욕, 토론토, 멕시코시티, 케이프타운 등 1,500명에게 전달된다고 발표했었습니다. 이미 지금쯤 전달되고 있겠지요?
