싱가포르 래플스를 운영하는 회사는 Raffles Hotels & Resorts입니다.
싱가포르 래플스를 기반으로 세워졌죠.
래플스라는 이름은 영국의 정치인이자 말레이시가 지방 총독이었던 Stamford Raffles(스탬포드 래플스)의 이름에서 따왔습니다.
사실상 싱가포르를 설립한 사람이지요.(동인도회사 출신)
래플스가 1819년 싱가포르를 영국 식민지로 선언하면서부터 사실상 싱가포르가 발전하기 시작했으니까요.

대체로 5성 이상급이라고 보시면 됩니다.
유형 분류로는 Luxury Hotel로 분류되구요.
래플스는 1990년대 후반부터 세계로 체인을 확장하기 시작했는데요.
현재는 오픈 예정인 2개 호텔을 포함해 17개 체인이 있습니다.
아무래도 체인의 시작점인 싱가포르호텔이 유명하구요.

이름은 앞에서 말씀드린대로 스탬포드 래플스에서 따왔구요.
건물은 1830년대 초반에 해변에 지어진 개인 소유 집이었습니다.
그러다가 Charles Emerson 박사라는 분이 1878년 건물을 임대해 Emerson호텔로 이용되었습니다.
이 후 1883년 이 박사가 사망하고 1887년 9월까지 학교 기숙사로 사용했다고 합니다.
그리고 앞서 소개드린 Sarkies Brothers가 이 건물을 임대해 1887년 12월 1일 10개 객실을 보유한 래플스 싱가포르 호텔을 오픈하게 됩니다.
오픈 때부터 해변과의 접근성, 매우 좋은 서비스와 시설로 인기가 많았다고 하네요.
그리고 오픈 후 첫 10년 간 3개의 새로운 건물을 지었다고 합니다.
1890년에 기존 건물 양쪽에 22개 스위트룸이 있는 2층짜리 건물을 추가했고, 옆 건물도 임대했다고 합니다.
또 1894년에는 Palm Court Wing을 완성했다고 합니다.
이로서 래플스 싱가포르는 75개 객실을 보유하게 되었습니다.
현재의 Palm Court Wing
이후 1899년 새로운 본관이 완성됩니다.
이 건물은 Swan & Maclaren의 Regent Alfred John Bidwell가 디자인했다고 하는데요.
Swan & Maclaren 회사나 Regent Alfred John Bidwell 개인 모두의 대표적인 건축물로 꼽힌다고 합니다.
우리가 생각하는 래플스 싱가포르의 건물이 이 때 완성된 것이지요.
이 건물은 그 당시 최첨단 건물이었다고 합니다.
전 객실에 전원이 공급되어 천장에 무려!! 선풍기가!!! 달려있었다고 하고요.
싱가포르 최초로 전기 조명도 제공했다고 하네요.

흰색 카라라 대리석으로 바닥을 꾸민 식당은 500명을 수용할 수 있었다고 합니다.

그러나 1930년대 전세계적인 대공황이 일어나면서, 1931년 Sarkies Brothers는 파산을 선언합니다.
이때부터 래플스의 수난시대가 시작되었다고 봐도 과언은 아닌데요.
1933년 재정문제가 해결되고 Raffles Hotel Ltd.가 설립되었습니다.
이 후 1942년에는 세계대전으로 인해 일본에 점령당하고 Syonan Ryokan(쇼난 료칸?, 남쪽 호텔의 빛 이라는 뜻이라네요.)이라는 이름으로 호텔명이 변경되었습니다.
정문도 동쪽으로 이동했다고 합니다.
이 때 호텔의 직원들은 호텔에서 사용하던 은식기들을 Palm Court Wing쪽에 묻었다고 합니다.
또 점령 소식을 들은 투숙객들은 마지막으로 왈츠를 췄다고도 하네요.
일본의 항복 후에는 Assistant Manager였던 M. S. Arathoon이 1945년 9월 재오픈 했습니다.
이 때 숨겨두었던 은식기들은 회수했다고 합니다.
(왠지 감동...ㅎㅎ)
그리고 잠시 동안 포로수용소로 사용되었다고 하네요.
이후 래플스 싱가포르는 1950년 에어컨 설치, 1970년 수영장 설치 등으로 개발되었습니다.
그러나 래플스는 싱가포르 정부의 적극적인 관광 장려 정책에 힘입어 발전하기 시작한 오차드 로드(Orchard Road)의 호텔들과 경쟁을 시작해야 했습니다.
1970년대에 들어서면서 건물 자체의 노후화로 타 호텔과의 경쟁에서 밀리기 시작했지요.
1987년에는 싱가포르의 국가기념물(National Monument)로 지정되었습니다.
이후 1989년에 리노베이션에 들어갑니다.
2년 간의 리노베이션 후 1991년 9월 16일 재개장 했습니다.
총 1.6억 달러가 들어갔으며, Architects 61에서 담당했습니다.
(최종적으로 2.8억 달러가 넘는다고는 기사도 있네요.)
인테리어는 Bent Severin and Associates이라는 곳에서 옛날 사진을 기반으로 해 디자인했다고 합니다.
기준점은 1915년으로 잡았다고 하네요.
리노베이션 후 1995년에 다시 국가기념물로 지정되었다고 합니다.

리노베이션을 한 래플스 싱가포르에는 큰 변화가 있었습니다.
바로 거의 대부분의 객실이 스위트룸으로 개발된 것입니다.
리노베이션 후 122개 객실로 오픈했는데 그중 103개가 스위트룸이었습니다.
이 스위트룸들 중 래플스 싱가포르에서 묵었던 유명인들의 이름을 따서 객실 이름을 붙인 방들이 있었습니다.
바로 Personality Suites입니다.
지금은 리노베이션 중이라 홈페이지에 아무 정보도 없네요;;;(예전에는 있었는데;;)
총 12개 Personality Suites이 있었습니다.

기본적으로 리츠 파리의 프레스티지 스위트(Prestige Suite)와 마찬가지로 해당 인물과 관련된 것들로 꾸며져 있었다고 보시면 됩니다.
컴퓨터 뒤지다 보니 예전에 캡쳐해둔걸 발견해서 올려봅니다.ㅎㅎ
이 중 가장 연관이 깊은 인물은 서머셋 모옴(Somerset Maugham)입니다.
Palm Court Wing쪽에 묵었다고 하네요.(찰리채플린도 마찬가지)

여튼 리노베이션 이후 싱가포르의 최고급 호텔로 약 30여년을 운영하다가 지난 2017년 12월 13일 '3단계 재생 프로그램(three-phase restoration program)'을 위해 리노베이션에 들어갔습니다.
2019년 1분기에 오픈할 예정이라고 합니다.
(원래 2018년 가을이었는데 계속 밀리네요.ㅎㅎㅎ)
처음 지어진게 1단계, 1991년 오픈이 2단계, 이제 3단계를 준비하는 겁니다.ㅎㅎ
그 밖에 재미있는 사실들을 소개해 드리겠습니다.
우선 호텔 3층에 **호텔 박물관(Raffles Hotel Museum)**이 있었다는 것입니다.
엽서나 사진 등도 판매했었다고 합니다.
이 박물관은 2012년에 문을 닫아서 지금은 볼 수는 없습니다.
그러나 자체 역사가도 있어서 어느 정도는 이를 대체한다고 하네요.
과거에 매니저였던 Leslie Danker씨가 호텔 내 역사가로 확동한다고 합니다.
고객들에게 래플스의 역사를 설명해 준다고 하네요.
